Variations on a Theme of Mozart As Sieglinde sleeps, Brünnhilde comes forward and announces that Siegmund will die a hero in battle. Through a series of questions, Siegmund learns that he will be taken to Valhalla where he shall find the other heroes and Wotan, and where he will be united with his father, Wälse. Siegmund acknowledges the presence of the daughter of Wotan and asks whether Sieglinde will also be there. 07:37
Tonadilla When Brünnhilde insists that Sieglinde must stay amongst the mortals, Siegmund refuses to be parted from his sister-bride. His protests are futile, explains Brünnhilde: he will be killed by Hunding and not even the sword will protect him. He who made the sword has decreed Siegmund's death and will take its power away. 04:55
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: Españoletas But if he must die and betray his beloved, protests Siegmund, he will not enter Valhalla. Brünnhilde, moved by the hero's devotion, promises to take care of Sieglinde. Yet Siegmund is determined that if he cannot look after his beloved himself then he will kill her with his sword. Even when the Valkyrie says that Sieglinde is with child, Siegmund remains resolute. 00:32
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: Rujero y paradetas When Siegmund raises his sword above Sieglinde, Brünnhilde car resist no longer and promises to save them both. She tells Siegmund to trust in the sword and that she will be there to protect him during the coming battle with Hunding, whose near- presence is announced by distant horn-calls. Brünnhilde leaves the couple alone. 00:47
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: La Miñona de Cataluña Siegmund kisses the sleeping Sieglunde before he leaves in search of his pursuer. Sieglinde awakes from a nightmare in which she relives the events of her mother's death and her own abduction. She is terrified to find herself alone. 01:21
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: Folias We hear Hunding's voice, calling for Woeful, answered by Siegmund's, challenging Hunding to fight. Eventually the men meet and the fight ensues. Brünnhilde hovers above Siegmund protecting him with her shield but as Siegmund aims a fatal blow at Hunding, Wotan appears holding out his spear against Siegmund's sword. The sword breaks allowing Hunding to strike his opponent dead. Brünnhilde pulls Sieglinde onto her horse and flees. Wotan stands for a moment over the corpse of Siegmund and then turns towards Hunding. He tells him to kneel before Fricka and, with a contemptuous wave of the god's arm, Hunding falls dead to the ground. In a terrible rage Wotan leaves in pursuit of Brünnhilde, threatening her with terrible punishment for her disobedience. 02:06
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: Passacalle de la cavalleria de Napoles The music depicts the Ride of the Valkyries as they carry the heroes slain in battle to a meeting place on the mountains before taking them on to Valhalla. As each of the Valkyries arrives they are greeted by the others. They are anxious to take the heroes to Valhalla but have to wait the arrival of Brünnhilde. Suddenly she is seen in the distance approaching in great haste and carrying not a hero but a woman. 01:40
Gaspar Sanz - Gaspar Sanz / Suite española: Canarios Brünnhilde begs the Valkyries to protect her and Sieglinde from the wrath of Wotan whom she has disobeyed by trying to save Siegmund. Brünnhilde asks each of the Valkyries in turn if she can borrow their horse but none dares to help her. 01:23
Villanesca Sieglinde coldly tells the Valkyrie not to worry on her behalf. She only wants to die and, if she is not to curse Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie should kill her now. But when Brünnhilde tells her of the Wälsung growing in her womb, Sieglinde begs the Valkirie's protection. In an act of immense sacrifice, Brünnhilde decides to face Wotan alone while allowing Sieglinde to escape eastwards into the forest where Fafner guards the Nibelung treasure and from where Wotan keeps his distance. She gives Sieglinde the fragments of Notung, Siegmund's sword, which she prophecies will one day be forged anew by Sieglinde's son - a son who will be named Siegfried (Joyous in Victory). Before running off, Sieglinde praises Brünnhilde for her sacrifice. 05:59
Isaac Albeniz - Torre bermeja Wotan's voice is heard in the distance calling angrily for Brünnhilde. When Wotan enters, the Valkyries attempt to shield Brünnhilde but the god dismisses their pleas for mercy. Do they not know that the Valkyrie has defied his will? 04:58
Andrés Segovia - Estudio sin luz Brünnhilde slowly comes forward. The god explains that she has created her own punishment. She existed only as part of his will and by flouting it she has acted against herself. She can no longer be a Valkyrie and will be banished from his sight and Valhalla. What is more he will send her into sleep to lie defenceless until she is claimed by the first man who finds her. He threatens the same punishment for any of the other Valkyries who would disobey him. They flee in terror leaving Brünnhilde and Wotan alone. 02:55
Andrés Segovia - Remembranza Brünnhilde questions Wotan's decision. Did she not carry out what Wotan truly wished? Did he not love the Wälsung? Siegmund had touched her heart and in saving him she had been faithful to Wotan's innermost desires. She may believe that, he repies, but while she indulged her love for Siegmund, he had suffered the most terrible anguish in reaching his decision. 02:50
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Preludio Against Wotan's firm resolve, Brünnhilde continues to plead her case. Her own mind told her to love what Wotan loved and if this punishment is carried out, then in dishonouring the Valkyrie, he will also be dishonouring himself. Unmoved, Wotan tells her that she was happy to follow the power of love, so now she will have no choice but to love the man who wakens her. At least, pleads Brünnhilde, let the man who wins her be no coward. 01:24
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Allegro Brünnhilde reminds Wotan of the Wälsungs whom he fathered and how she savedd Sieglinde and her unborn child along with the sword that Wotan had made for Siegmund. Wotan replies that he has washed his hands of the Wälsungs and they can expect no protection from him and as Brünnhilde has turned away from him, he must now turn away from her. She must accept her punishment. Brünnhilde makes one final attempt to change Wotan's mind: at least if she is to suffer the punishment of sleep, let her sleeping body be protected by a fire that only the most fearless hero will brave. 00:52
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Zarabanda Wotan, deeply moved, bids farewell to his beloved daughter and promises that only one shall win her as a bride - one who is freer than the god himself. 01:05
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Gabota Staring into her eyes he remembers how they inspired him in the past. He imprints a long kiss on them and she sinks unconscious to the ground. He covers her with her shield. 00:51
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Despacio The god points his spear at a rock and calls upon Loge to girdle the rock with fire. 00:53
Santiago De Murcia - Santiago de Murcia / Suite in D minor: Giga A tonge of flame issues from the rock and guided by Wotan's spear encircles the mountaintop. After solemnly intoning the command that no one who fears his spear shall pass through the fire, Wotan slowly withdraws through the circle of fire. 01:57
